Diocesan Environmental Officer
To get us all started I am arranging a series of workshops across the Diocese and my hope is that every parish will be represented. If you already have a policy in place, well done! but please come along and share your knowledge and experience, and hopefully your achievements, with others who have yet to begin. Attached to this letter you will find details of the workshops at four venues: you may come to whichever is convenient for you.
In adopting the diocesan policy the Synod recognised that parishes would need to put their own parochial plans in place and as the Diocesan Environmental Officer I am able to offer help with that and with any other aspect of meeting the challenge. What you choose to do may be a major project like installing solar panels or putting up a wind turbine, but whatever you do decide to do, however large or small, will definitely help – and may often save you money!. For example, you could change all your light bulbs, reduce waste (don’t use plastic cups!), reduce your water use, organise a supervised ‘walk to school’ for the local children, cycle to church! And there are lots of other things that can be done at church and at home, as a group and as an individual.
How will the (small) changes we effect make a difference? Well, at the very least we won’t be adding to the problem and by working together we can make a huge difference. Changing just one high energy light bulb to a low energy one saves 75kg of carbon dioxide a year.
I shall look forward to meeting your parish representatives at the workshops but in the meantime if you have any queries please do not hesitate to ring me.
